The Next Adventure Includes YOU!So it's true. This is the first blog post I've written since 2014. It's a crazy kind of homecoming. And the way it came about is bittersweet. I jumped online this morning to essentially cut and paste this life. Post by post I started to take it apart. And in the doing I relived a lot of who I was at that time. I actually started to blog in 2009. Ten years ago.

Unexpectedly, it was cool to meet the me from back then again. I was a lot more inspirational in the posts than I remember being in life. For instance, what I remember is being exhausted a lot, and writing from a place of desperation. Every mom of a 4 year old can relate, it's so easy to lose who you are in what you do all day. I wrote so I could keep the part of me that was creative and an artist alive. I wrote because I needed art friends to connect with as much as I needed mom friends.

So life was a lot different in 2009. And I like seeing who I was, and I'm happy to be picking up where she left off. It feels a lot like a do over, a lot like a continuation, a lot like coming full circle.

Because here I am again, ten years later, and I'm starting a blog. It's going to be an amazing place with videos, inspiration, techniques, and encouragement. I'm seriously excited. Which is interesting, because it was a year ago when I realized that God had placed this in my heart and I'll admit to telling him then, "I can't. I'm too tired. It's too much and too big." and I basically ran. Hard and far.
But that was a year ago and in a year a lot has changed. I can honestly tell you now that I am completely thrilled to say,

"Well Crafted Studio is coming soon."

I hope you'll join me because the best part of revisiting this blog? It's been reading the comments you all wrote. February 1st, we launch wellcraftedstudio.com. It will be amazing if you could come. My hope is that the new site will be a place you can visit with a cup of coffee in hand, and together we'll play. We'll make stuff, try stuff, probably fail at a few things. But we'll do it together with tutorials, videos, interviews with some amazing creatives, and lots and lots of crafty joy. It will be place you can draw from for inspiration and will encourage you to fully live the life you were created for. It will be community. I can't wait to have you visit.

PS- leave a comment and tell me what you'd like to see at the new site and what you've been doing. It would be awesome to catch up!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14477444986728004457noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8370161902048109420.post-21977805660227642362014-01-01T08:00:00.000-06:002014-01-01T08:00:00.472-06:00Enjoying the View

There's something about turning the page on the calender year that naturally gets us reflecting and today I hopped on and I started looking at my blog again. It's been a while. And after looking at some past posts I kind of want to update you on who and where I am today. To begin, I had on my profile that I'm the mom of a 7 year old boy- I changed it to 9 cause he's almost that age. Wow! I think I began this blog when he was 5 or 6. I can now add Artistic Director at Art 2 Heart ( a christian non profit creative arts ministry) to my list of "wife, mom, and artist". I started with A2H as a volunteer artist about 3 years ago and remember thinking "this could be a full time job for someone". It's basically turned into a full time job for me. I hesitated to say that for quite a while, cause I don't get paid. But my husband called it like it was last summer and it really pretty much is. I get to be an artist, I get to encourage others to develop and appreciate their own creativity, I get to help others with my product designs. It's all pretty darn cool. And all a total gift from God. Cause only He gives gifts this good.
I also get to work with the best people. Which is a huge switch from when I started to blog. Back then I was on my own a lot, with only a couple of kindred hearts I met via etsy to companion with through email. Being part of Art 2 Heart has meant joining a team of like minded women and I'm thrilled to have their support and encouragement on a daily basis. That's a pretty huge shift. And as my involvement with Art 2 Heart has grown, I've done less publishing but I still try to meet the Sew Somerset and Somerset Home deadlines-because that's where I started and it's something I do out of a sense of gratitude almost. Also, I often see God using the art I publish, later on as a product design. I also create and sell my own work at Art 2 Heart. I still see the wire/fabric sculpture and mixed media as my art but really enjoy sewing with my machine, crafting, and doing all the other fun new things I get to do.
Let's see... other things that have changed. I'm a redhead now. I'm also completely obsessed with torch fire enameling. I'm also on year 3 or 4 with the whole gluten/dairy/sugar free thing. Although to be honest I've been sneaking sugar coffees for the last couple of months and the holidays were not anything to brag about..but I'm going straight soon-honest and for true!!! I love my kid, and my husband even more then I did- oh and I'm turning 40 this May. That's crazy. I have not had my etsy shop open for a couple years now. I took a break when I began really committing more and more time to Art 2 Heart and I just haven't gotten around to opening it again. I toy with the idea every once in a while but to be honest this blog is a higher priority to me. So if I was to take anything back on it would probably be to post more here. Cause I miss you guys. You've been awesome when I needed awesome and I appreciate it so much. Plus I like thinking that my sharing is encouraging some of you through what I write, or inspiring you with the art or tutorials I share.
So that's pretty much it. But man, when I look back to my first posts I can see how really far I've come. And best yet, I really like the view. And now, I'm really looking forward to a great year in 2014-

and I hope you are too!!!
Tonight whilst the boys were watching some TV after our pizza and movie party I cruised Pinterest. Love Pinterest. All sorts of ideas and things to try. But part of the show caught my attention. It was a comedy about a little girl who loved to dance but was absolutely horrible. Her dad encouraged her to dance if she loved to dance and not worry about how good or bad she was. I totally related. In fact the "Good Ship Lollipop" started to hum its' way through my mind at once because it was the song I practiced tap dancing to when I was 6 or so and really really wanted to be a dancer. It was from a community ed class and all I remember was shuffle kicking my heart out- but never at the same time as anyone else. I have a memory of always going left when the rest of the class went right and not knowing how to change it. And as I talked to my husband after the tv show wrapped up, a host of other like experiences went through my mind. The Summer ed acting class where I thought I'd shine and instead learned I couldn't act. The drums audition for band where I was kindly told you had to have some sense of rhythm to play percussion. The grade school musicals that I sang my heart out for- but always at the wrong key. Then there was the high school cheer-leading tryouts that I went to because when I was 4 or 5 there was nothing I wanted more to be then a Dallas Cowboy's cheerleader. I told my husband tonight, there was the A squad, the B squad, and then the wrestling cheerleaders. You can guess what team I made-it was the only one where the cheerleaders sat still while they cheered. Always my lack of coordination, inability to tell left from right, and lack of rhythm came up as a block. And honestly, I'm glad today. Because as an adult I can look back and realize that I can't tell left from right because I'm ambidextrous in some areas. I draw better left handed although I'm actually right handed. I really don't have a sense of rhythm but that doesn't stop me from totally loving my Zumba classes- and there is no one better then me at singing and dancing in their pj's when my favorite song comes on. Even so, with all these memories of things I tried growing up, only to realize they weren't "my thing" I started to think of all the people out there making resolutions tonight. Resolutions to eat better, live better, be better. And I think I'm going to resolve to pretty much stay who I am.
Because finally after 39 years I found out what I really love to do and what I really do well. Because although I couldn't make a basket if my life depended on it, although I'm master of the "spontaneous solo's" at Zumba, and although my singing is still off key, I love so much about who I am right now. I love that I have an amazing family, a job/ministry I love and believe in, a host of sweet and supportive friends, and a list a mile long of things I can't wait to learn and try. I love that God made me an artist and gave me a way of seeing the world that is pure art. I love that I can take paper and paint and fabric and glue and make something absolutely unique that glorifies God with it's creation. I love that I get to introduce other people to their own creativity and encourage and empower them to use it.
Life is pretty good. There are hard things, I have a couple of deadlines right after the holidays that have had me working over the holidays, and there's always the seasonal depression looming at this time of year, but even those a bright side. I had to work, but oh my gosh am I glad that I get to do what I love, with people I love, for people I love. The seasonal "blues" are there but they make me pay closer attention to how I feel and they make me force myself to get involved with projects and people to stay engaged.
So tonight, think a little about the you that you are and not the you that you wish you were. It's ok to want to live better, eat better, be better but make sure it's a better You that you're resolving to be and not a better someone else. Does that make sense? Appreciate who you are, do all the things you love whether you're any good at them or not, be excited about the amazing gifts and abilities you were given and be passionate about the things God's given you a passion for. Resolve to be a "you-er" you to quote Dr. Seuss, because there's no one else just like you.
But I'm also going to resolve not to resolve. But to be open to what God might have planned for me. Life never goes exactly the way I think it will anyways, and if I leave it up to God it's usually much better then I could have "resolved" to have it. But I'm all for dreaming because I think that in the dreams, God's preparing you for what He might have planned. So tonight- don't resolve. appreciate you. Let God lead- but go ahead and dream. Dream Big.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14477444986728004457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8370161902048109420.post-74815566237053333472013-07-04T08:00:00.000-05:002013-07-04T08:00:02.755-05:00Fourth of July Corsage Tutorial With a Sneak Peek!!!I wrote this post 2 years ago but still LOVE this tutorial so if you haven't seen it- check it out and at the end I put a sneak preview of the corsage I'll have a tutorial for in the next Somerset Seasons and Holidays out in September!!!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">Happy Fourth of July!!! To celebrate today's holiday I whipped up this sweet little holiday corsage yesterday. It's
red, white and blue at it's best. With a little imagination and fabric
you can easily adapt this tutorial to any holiday or special occasion. I
think this would be a lovely finishing touch to your outfit when worn
to a wedding or garden party. The design is meant to be reminiscent of
the ol' time corsages worn high on the shoulder but because of the
versatile pin back/clip combo it can also be worn as a hair accessory or
you can clip it to a long necklace for a focal accent. <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">However you choose to wear it- Enjoy!
It's almost the Fourth and I have a cute little wire wreath tutorial today to help you celebrate in Style. So if you've been wishing for something new to help decorate the porch for the day tomorrow, to hang at the front of your kids' trike in the kiddie parade or to hang on the mailbox this is quick and easy fix. I had all the materials on hand, and if you don't, then I promise they're easily found at your latest craft store.
The reason I recommend the MS paint here is that it will adhere to the metal of the frame. It takes a week or so to cure completely but they'll be dry to the touch within 10 minutes.I painted loosely, not covering the frame completely. Set aside.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">Some ideas for altering the design would be to add a wire word like <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">freedom, maybe adding some wire stars made from 16-gauge steel wire, or doing a cute little fabric pennant across the center that says something patriotic, instead of the ribbon. Fourth of July ribbon is super cheap at the craft stores right now, and will get cheaper in the next few days. <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">But play around, make one like mine, or make your own! Just have fun and Enjoy the Fourth!!!!!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14477444986728004457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8370161902048109420.post-11054591401182456662013-06-26T09:35:00.000-05:002013-06-26T21:25:30.033-05:00A New Day and a New Post (With a few new Obsessions as well)

Hello All! I've been away for a while again and have been waiting for the right time to post again. This morning I woke up and really felt like it was time. A year ago that would have meant booting up the laptop, downloading my photos, and grabbing a cup of coffee. This morning, on a whim, I decided to see what I could do with my ipad and wireless keyboard and so within seconds of downloading the blogger app for ios onto the ipad I was up and running on this post. I LOVE THAT!

Why I am supposed to post this morning? I'm not sure but I do have a ton of stuff to share with you.
It's been a while! First, Obsession Number one! I am now on my sixth piece of Alabama Chanin inspired hand embellished clothing. I started drooling over designer Natalie Chanin's work back when her first book came out. But it wasn't until her latest, Alabama Studio Sewing and Design came out, and my Mother-In-Law became interested as well, that I actually attempted any of her work. My MIL did all the hard set up work that comes with any new project. She figured out how to cut the stencils, how to paint the fabric in your kitchen, what paints and brushes work best, and even adjusted a couple of the patterns. THEN, she walked me through some basic dressmaking skills. For instance, the arrow that's on a pattern piece IS important! I thought it was just a hint as to which direction to place the pattern piece on the fabric. My MIL showed me how to use it to measure against the edge of the fabric to ensure the grain of the fabric is perfectly lined up so that the dress hangs nice. I started this dress last July and finished it right before Christmas. I also made a couple of bolero's, a skirt, a couple of shirts, and am working on a long skirt now. It's perfect for picking up and setting down whenever I have a little bit of time.
Next, Obsession Number two! I admit I have fallen hard for Annie Sloan's line of Chalk Paints. This one was my own mother's fault. She took a craftsy class last fall about upcycling furniture and started encouraging me to try painting some pieces with her. I had heard so much about Annie's paints that it wasn't too hard to convince me to give them a try- one thrift store chair later and I was hooked. It's another down time sort of activity. And it's quick. A small table or chair takes just a few hours. The colors are beautiful and the finish is gorgeous and I'd highly recommend you give them a try. I'll tell you more about that later.

The other extra time user up for me has been my volunteer work for the arts ministry, Art 2 Heart. I'm on the leadership team and it has been such a gift from God to pair me with this group of women. I'm part of a team there and love the companionship and sense of purpose we all share. Being an artist is lonely business sometimes and if you're somewhat introverted like I am, with a light deprivation sensitivity it's easy to crawl into a shell in October only to emerge in April or May. This year I struggled, it was so so grey and spring took so so long here in MN. BUT being involved with my sisters at Art 2 Heart, bible study, and my family all really kept me from completely cocooning.

I think the biggest reason I took a break from blogging wasn't that I was occupied elsewhere, or struggling with my moods, or had new hobbies, or new relationships to explore, but because my life has really changed and I wanted to have the opportunity to step back and see what was really important to me. Who I have become. Who God has led me to become, in the last couple of years. When I first began this journey I was a frustrated new mom struggling to find myself in that new role. Then I was a scrapbooker, a knitter, and then a wire and fabric fanatic. I was taking chances in a big way for the first time in my life, I had my first magazine submissions, my first magazine publications, my first audacious thought about writing a book, and then a couple of years after, my first book was published. I thought that was the end all be all but realized that it wasn't. There was more but I needed to discover what that was. What comes next? The world says make a big deal of your self, promote yourself, market yourself, at the expense of privacy. And it didn't feel right. I really believe that it's God and the Holy Spirit working in me that has led me here. So how to give Him the glory?

So I've stepped back from it all, done some searching, some reading, some writing, kept up with my magazine submissions, and my volunteer work but not much else. Now, months later I really feel like I'm on much firmer ground.

with; it's not my favorite kind of post. I like teaching and inspiring and sharing, but sometimes, I just want you to know what's going on. What's real and authentic. So will I continue with the blogging? I think so- especially now that it works into my day a little more conveniently then it did before. And especially now that I feel I have a voice again that's authentically me. It's just taken me a little while. Thanks for your patience!!!!

UPDATE: 9:23pm So the oh so convenient ipad/google+ way of blogging that I thought was going to work so well ended up with my deleting several hundred photos. Some of which were on this blog so please bear with me the next couple of days while I update.

I used a straw wreath form, strips of heavy muslin, vintage and found buttons, some vintage trim, a glue gun (with extra glue sticks), and a scissor.

If you want to put a dab of glue where it first overlaps you can. I wouldn't advise gluing to the wreath unless you removed the plastic covering the straw. I didn't.
Just randomly in pieces that would wrap over the wreath frame but not necessarily around it. Why waste material where you can't see it- right? Hot glue these to the covered wreath frame. A few dabs at the edges should do it.
I used some vintage crochet trim I found at an occasional sale. If you had lace you could dye it red, or you could just use some red ribbon, or if you happen to find red crochet lace then you're golden. To make the rosettes I just coiled the lace in my hand and then holding the shape tightly I used hot glue to adhere it to the wreath form. I had to add some glue inside the rosette here and there to hold it's shape as well. Then add a pretty vintage button to the center, a few lengths to the side as tails and you're done!!! Step back and admire the bright shot of red and lace this adds to your home. You can also check out my pinterest board Remaking the Book for more ideas of what other people have done. But here are some of mine....

First, check out the SUPER cute little book paper snowmen!!! My dad cut these out of Lemony Snicket books I found at the thrift store and then my mom took over and hot glued the spine to create a circle and then between each and every page so that they fan out. She has WAAAy more patience then me. Talk about tedious and man does it use up the glue sticks. But as it was my mom and not me being tedious, I was lovin' them and had my dad cut eight more. After she did the tedious part, I got in on the act and used the spine and cover of the book to made a little hat for it and a little nose. I was trying to reuse as much of the book as possible. We also added a little scarf and two little birch stick arms. Then my mom had the BRILLIANT but again tedious idea of adding a little mini banner. So she punched out all those cute little triangles with a nifty little punch that she has. Next, she brushed on some glitter paint. I mean, these turned out SO DARN CUTE!!!! Can you believe it? I took the first nine and brought them into Art 2 Heart, where there are a few left should you want one. But THEN, can you believe it, she kept going and she went and made the cutest little trees for them as well. These were from book pages again, but she mounted them onto old candle holders for a truly sweet vintage look.

IF, you don't feel like rushing out and trying this out for yourself, my parents do have an etsy shop, The Old Shop Teacher, where they are selling a few more of the snowmen and trees that they JUST finished. She made one with a little gnome hat, and another is looking debonair in a cap. She got pretty creative- don't you think they are absolutely adorable???
I also made up a wire and paper tree that I couldn't wait to show you. I saw one in a shop and completely unable to afford the $100+ price tag I went ahead and made my own version. I mean, it was wire- I felt I had to be able to figure it out or I couldn't claim to be a wire artist. I did figure it out, but it was another tedious project and for this one I was on my own. So I stayed up really late one night and made one. I am EXTREMELY happy with how it turned out, and would you believe it's only my same old 16-gauge steel wire, some more dictionary pages, and a small wooden block? The block I painted with gesso, wrapped with some patterned washi tape and then sealed it with medium. The star at the top and the sweet little garland on the tree are vintage mother of pearl buttons. I have a quick little step out for you of that. I'll post that tomorrow. It's my 3 or 5 days of Christmas projects blitz- ENJOY!!!!!
Whilst I've been working merrily on the poinsettia projects (putting them on wreaths, tweaking, making wire words etc.) I've been fitting in some of the fun Christmas projects that have been swirling around in my head like a little snowstorm. One of these are the cute snow scene jars I've run into on etsy, pinterest, etc. I found a link to a tutorial on Rhonna Farrer's blog which you should really hop over and see, but I've also stepped it out here for you as well. :) Cause it's fun.
Stirred Glittery Fun

So disclaimer, I had my son help me with this project. I was shamed into it by a friend who crafts with her daughters all the time. Never mind that they're a minimum of 3 years older then Jasper who's seven. Never mind that they're sweet creative souls, and my son is well, a boy; I thought it was a dandy plan. So last Sunday after a quickie trip to Jo Ann's for some glitter, and mason jars we were set. Here's the supply list, we had much of it at home already.
Fake snow/batting tuffs
Glitter
Little woodland or arctic animals (check your local bakery for the cupcake picks or buy one of the forest or arctic animal toobs from the craft store- we had a huge container already.)
Bottle brush trees (BIG hint but these are cheapest at Home Depot- $6.97 a 21 pack vs. $19 at craft stores)
Little twigs, rocks or other natural elements
Hot glue gun with ammunition
Surface to hot glue on
Some little bits to create height, little sewing spools, glass pebbles, corks, etc.
optional: Paint and brush for lid of jar or to paint decorative items like twigs. Glitter paint is fun on animals too!

Step One: Gather all supplies and clear a surface to create on. I put down a craft mat and was super glad I did. Everything peels off those and their heat resistant.

Step Two: Unscrew lid from jar and on inside, hot glue in center of lid, your spools, corks, pebbles whatever to create height you want. The higher the trees and animals are raised up the more snow you have to add to hide that area. But the more they're raised the closer to eye level they are and it looks like big snowy drifts which is cool. You can also tuck in tufts of batting to hide spools and corks.

Step Three: Hot glue tree, animal, igloo, whatever you have on top of height creating items.Make sure it all fits within circumference of lid top. If you'd like to paint, or glitter your items do that before gluing them in place.

Step Four: This is the step your boy will like so much they won't want to help with any of the rest of it from now on- just this part. (This is also the part your husband might walk in, notice the glitter, the hot glue cords stretched to the table, and the seven year old shaking lots and lots of glitter, some of it into a jar. Don't worry your husband will probably get that deer in the headlights look, spin around and head back to his office until dinner). In jar, add fake snow, toss in a couple of shakes of glitter if you'd like, and gently insert decorations into jar and screw lid tightly down. Now, if you're lucky you have just enough snow. If you're more trial and error (or distracted by your child), you'll have too much or too little. Don't take everything out and off, just invert jar so it's right side up and unscrew top. Pull open enough to shake out some excess snow or to add more. Then screw tight again, and invert. At this point I also decided I wanted to paint my lids so I did it with
them all ready assembled. But I'd probably recommend doing this at the
beginning. They'd look really good glittered too I'd think.
I've truly been there and back again in the last few months, only to make a few more trips of it. How about you? Was your summer crazy too? I was cruising along in May and even June but at the beginning of July I just kind of hit a road block and had to make some choices. The result of those choices had me basically turning off all electronic pulls on my time. No facebook, no blogging, no reading blogs, etc. for the rest of the summer.

See I was having a really hard time working, being a full time mom, keeping my depression at bay, producing art in quantity, staying in touch with friends and family, as well as meeting what I thought was others expectations for me, and my expectations for myself. I try to be the best mom to my son, housekeeper, cook, wife, artist, writer, friend, and christian I can but I have to admit trying to do it all, all the time is a little nuts. During the school year my time is better segregated. I know I'll have blocks of time I can devote to each but during the summer everything gets all blurred.

So all of August I took time off. I tried not to do too much art and crafting, I did the minimum required of me for my job, I checked out of the volunteer work I do, and tried to get back on an even keel. Kind of the time equivalent of a bonus check on the budget. It catches you up and allows you to start the budget fresh again.

I have to believe I'm not the only one who ever has to start over. I know the cover of the Sunday insert had Katie Couric saying something about life being a series of reboots. Taking time off to turn off was challenging. To be honest I couldn't do it in pieces, I tried that. In the end it took completely checking out, removing myself, and reading books. I get lost in books and hadn't read for quite a while so I made big use of my library card this last month. Found some really good series and let my mind rest. How do you reboot? Do you find you need to unplug entirely or do you have a daily or weekly ritual that re focuses you? I'd love to know if you have any tricks for finding and keeping balance.
Besides distracting myself with books, I've been trying to play. I've found that giving myself permission to just play and follow some whims usually brings me to a new place that was just where I needed to go. So I made some dolls in August. One for the new little niece I visited in mid August and another for a new little adopted niece. That one isn't quite finished yet but I'll post pics when it is. I'm also making some fall clothes Alabama Chanin style. It's so so fun and just a little bit obsessive but the end result is just gorgeous. I have a dress that's partially done and a bolero I just finished. I'm excited about both. There's just something about fall that makes me want to be a fashion designer. This year the Alabama Chanin remake is in full swing. :) I'll keep you updated.

Art 2 Heart- Missions Gift Shop in Hamel

One of the absolute best things about the product development roll I took on last spring with Art 2 Heart is the ability to match people with hearts to projects that help. That involves knowledge of both the skills required or possessed, and the interest of the crafter. It's sheer torture to tell someone who works with knits to make bracelets if they don't want to. So, if you've considered using your mad craft skills to help others, a first word of advice, stick to your interest group. Only participate if it's something you'd genuinely enjoy doing. Next, do you want to work alone or in a group? If you can't find a group- would you consider making one? It's super fun to create with others. You can approach the group in two ways as well. You can see it as a bunch of gals pounding out the projects, or you can see the group itself as a mission. Are you willing to bring in newbies and teach them the how-to's? Would you like to involve local immigrants or the handicapped? Also, consider that just because you're an at home sort of person, groups can and do form online every day around a specific interest. Spend a little time searching and I'm sure you'll find something of interest! I've also included a few at the end of this post to get you started.

The cutest! A doll pattern from Oh So Dollin- LOVE!!!

Third consideration, how much are you willing to donate? Is is just time that you have, or do you have a stash of fabric that you'd love to use up? Are you willing to finance your work with the goal of donating it? I thought that to support a group I needed to make all my contributions donations. A friend suggested to me that I do consignment to cover the cost of materials and donate what's profit. Additionally, you can work with a gift shop that donates it's proceeds to missions and consign with them. They get a percentage of the sale plus you can gift them with whatever is above what you need to cover your costs.
More ideas then crafting time?Consider donating ideas. There are really great groups of sewers, jewelry makers, diy crafters and pinterest devotees who are just dying for a way to play and help too. But they need ideas. They need to know what they can make that will really make a difference. Maybe that's baby blankets for a local crisis nursery, or knitted newborn hats for a local preemie ward, or maybe it's something else. I ran across a blog asking people to knit sweaters for penguins once. They'd been saved from an oil spill but weren't able to keep themselves warm. They needed sweaters. SO SO cute! Or the crafter might be creating goods for sale with proceeds going to a mission organization. Then they need someone with an eye to current trends who is able to pinpoint projects and help them get off the ground by maybe supplying step by steps and/or samples or someone willing to come and teach. We had a student at the shop who wanted to help but the paintings she donated weren't selling. I heard they were great but wall art just wasn't moving there. SO my group suggested she try the stamped jewelry and found her a class and aided with the set up and it's been a fabulous success! She is truly truly amazing and what she's done for others has just rocked our world.

But today I wanted to start to share just a few more with direct links. Maybe you'll decide to help out one of these missions, maybe it'll give you ideas for starting your own. God can and will use every skill you have if you allow Him too. Trust me!

First up today- as I was looking for a cute baby doll pattern I stumbled across the blog, Dolly Donations. They provide the pattern and you donate the dolls. Then they distribute them in places like Rwanda, Uganda, and Haiti. Dolls are both companions and security for little girls, I think this is a great ministry. Maybe you want to take this idea and provide Korean looking dolls for your local adoption agency. I bet that new parents would love to gift their child with a special doll as they prepare to bring them home. Once, when I called 911 and and rescue truck came they gave my son the cutest little bear to help him be brave. It was something I appreciated with my whole heart.
Here are a couple more cute patterns that you can purchase and adapt to whatever you have in your heart to do.
An old frame turned granny chic fab as a jewelry display. I even posted this tutorial showing you how to turn an old frame into a ribbon holder. It's been done. I know...

I've also got a peak at a new idea I've been playing with using my collection of old trays. We're trying to redo the jewelry displays at Art 2 Heart for summer and these were the ideas I've come up with. I think these turned out pretty fab so I thought I'd show you the pics and do a little how-to.

First, you need an old frame or two. You also need corkboard or foam core cut to fit said frame. Then, you take that big ol' roll of muslin you have stashed and cover the corkboard with it. I wrapped my frame and then used a staple gun to secure it. I've also used duct tape. It works.

Next, you get to decorate. You can either choose
option a) and glue on doilies, or b) stencil a doily border, c) both of
the above, or I guess d) leave it as is.

In this next pic you can get an idea of the finished concept. I used wire flowers I'd sprayed cream and just hung them on a push pin that I'd inserted into the corkboard. They look like little handles.

Another idea I had was to use my old tray collection. With a crop-a-dile big bite and a package of Tim Holtz brand decorative hardware you can make this in about, oh, 5 minutes. I'm going to use E6000 to attach a hanger to the top back of this but it would look great displayed in a small easel as well.

So there you go- a little daily dose of inspiration. Hope you enjoyed it!!!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14477444986728004457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8370161902048109420.post-1894653758356798732012-07-04T06:00:00.000-05:002013-01-23T20:53:11.663-06:00A Little More Fourth.... Fourth of July Fabric CorsageEncore from Last Year's Fourth on the blog: Enjoy your day!!!!

Happy Fourth of July!!!
However you choose to wear it- Enjoy!
Step Six:
Choose a couple of coordinating fabric and cut 2-3 leaf shapes. Place
on canvas and leaving a 1/4" border cut around your patterned fabric.
Rip a few more strips to hang down decoratively from corsage as well.
Step Seven:
Play around with your positioning and then stitch leaves to back of
fabric flower as desired. Feel free to embellish your leaves by
stitching around their edge or adding some buttons or beads. To add

So part of the whole goodness that is my life right now is that I get to scout trends. My pics? Granny chic of course is on it's way, I'm loving Zakka (as any of you who have seen my pinterest board know), and I'm going to go with rabbits for the next big forest animal. It's huge in Japan I guess and really there's just so many dang cute things you can do with bunnies. So hedgehogs and dachsunds- maybe. But bunnies-definitely.

Today though, one of my predictions of a few years ago found some personal vindication in this post. Personal because I don't think I told too many people about it. But anyways, two or three years ago I found some rainbow fabric and it hit me. Rainbows are due for a comeback. Not only were they big when I was a girl (and all good trends come round more then once), but they really speak to an optimism that we all need right now.

From Riley Construction on Etsy

So here's how trends work in my mind. First of all, there's historical precedent that you can factor in (what goes around comes around and nostalgia play a big part). Second, there's geographical location. What's big in the trendiest places now? Check the UK, Europe and Japan and you'll get some pretty good hints. Next, look at fashion. What's big in fashion will usually filter down to home decor and crafting before too long. Lace is a great example of that. Colors seem to run their own course and there are lots of blogs devoted to colors. My friend Shelley from SingleStone Studios has a great color combination post that goes up once a week featuring different trendy color combos.

From Block Party Press on Etsy

But here's the biggest thing to my mind and it's why I believe that birds and butterflies have had such a great run of it. A truly big trend is usually indicative of the emotional state of the populace at large. Which is why so many people embrace it. Think about it, it's a time of uncertainty, we're feeling tethered to our homes because of the poor housing market, we're losing our jobs, and maybe our homes. We're seeing life get really really hard for a lot of families and we read daily about some new instability in finance, business, or the world. Birds denote flight and thus freedom. We're grounded now but we all want the chance to fly. And many many people are taking that chance now- in the midst of instability. There are more baby boomers starting businesses now than any other group. I think they realize that if they're going to stretch their wings, and reach for the dreams now is the time to do it. Everyday I look at Etsy and realize how many people have decided to make the big decision to make a business from their art. For some it's a can't lose philosophy- they lost their job and have nothing to lose by taking a leap now. But that mentality is catchy. Why not me? Is the question that starts many a business. So in the midst of economic instability there is a longing to fly. Another thing about birds is that they are part of the natural world and the more we become disconnected from nature the more the creative soul reaches for a way to regain what's lost. Thus we have birch branches in our offices, and stumps in our living rooms.

I truly believe that birds will stay until our societal problems give at least the illusion of or promise of stability. But here's where we get to the rainbow, and why I think it's taken it's own sweet time arriving as a full blown trend. Rainbows are optimistic but I think they belong to a world that hopes to see the end of the chaos. The end of the storm needs to be in sight before we begin to truly look for the rainbow in our lives. Not to say that some of us won't jump the gun and start making rainbow art now (yup-did it). There are always a group of crazy optimists among creatives and I have to admit to being one of them. But when we start to see rainbows- lots and lots of rainbows that will say a lot about how we as a world perceive life then. So stick around- I bet it won't be too long....
First, I was amazed at how long it took. Who knew 7 videos would take all night? Second, I was kind of secretly impressed that I could do it. I'm not too techie and the fact that imovie made the editing process easy enough for me to work is seriously amazing.
I finally went to bed and finished loading the last video this morning. JUNE 1st. That was my deadline and I JUST made it. Yay! The videos really did turn out great and I had a ton of fun making them. As always I wanted to make sure there was a ton of technique heavy content so in addition to the things you need to know to make the mobile I added in extra's wherever I could. I even pulled out the beads and show you how to wrap your wire butterfly with beads (a technique I used to make the cool pendants in my shop). I really want you to know what the possibilities are when combining wire and fabric to make mixed media art. I also get REALLY in depth on how to make and shape wire flowers. If you've ever wanted to try making flowers like the one's I've published in Cloth Paper Scissors and Sew Somerset this walks you through step by step.
Just now I was looking at the workshop site and realized that I did something I would have told you a year or two ago there was no way I could. Sometimes God sends us those very opportunities that we say "never" to and points and says "go". And we go. And wonder of wonder's it turns out REALLY COOL! So I'm grateful today that Alma Stoller gave me this opportunity and I'm grateful to those of you who have taken the leap with me and signed up for what I know will be an experience you'll really enjoy.
So yesterday I received an e-mail from the amazing Alma Stoller of STITCHED. In honor of her birthday and because we're half way through the year, she is dropping the enrollment fee for STITCHED to just $40!!! That means that you save $49 from the original enrollment cost. For those who don't know about STITCHED you can read this post all about how I have my very first video workshop premiering in a couple of weeks on STITCHED. It's really a fabulous concept and I bet a whole bunch of you were really tempted a few weeks ago when I mentioned all the amazing instructors and all the fabulous workshops you would have access to. So think about it... but not too much. I'd just do it. :)

Wow- Seriously the months just keep getting away from me. This is a busy one however, we have several family birthdays (including mine), Mother's Day, Article Deadlines, End of the School Year Events, an art/craft fair, and then there's my Art 2 Heart work! That has to be the most rewarding right now. Last week I was able to meet with a group of people who are working with a group of women in India, helping them transition from horrible life experiences to a new life. Then, that same week I was able to meet with a representative of the Mostacillo's de Fe (Beads of Faith) group that Art 2 Heart is helping get off the ground in Flores de Villa, Peru. From both I heard that they need western designers to come along side of them and help them develop products. They want so badly to earn money and when they spend their time creating they of course want it to sell. We were able to get one of our first orders for wire flowers from this group that we then attached to wire wreath frames and debuted them earlier this month. I am happy to say that one (nail biting for me) week later and they had all sold ( I don't even have a picture)!
For my birthday my husband took the day off and took me to lunch downtown Mpls. at Brit's Pub. It was nice so we sat on the sidewalk and just enjoyed ourselves! THEN, he took me to Crafty Planet for my birthday surprise which was SURPRISE- I got to pick out fabric! So of course I stocked up on the Echino fabric I know I've raved to you about. I took a pic. Just in case you're curious.

I'm also hard at work on the pdf for my STITCHED class. I got a little slap happy the other night and in an attempt to make the basics of wire interesting I wrote things up article style with captions like "Getting Down and Dirty...(i.e. tips for how to deal with the oil on the wire), and "It's Finisimo" for the information regarding the wire's black finish. So having some fun with that.
and I'll show you how to create different shapes including hearts,
clouds, flowers, and more! I'll also share ways of taking your new
skills further and incorporating elements like vintage
book text, patterned papers, metal paints, and fabric scraps to really
make your shapes into beautiful little layered works of art.
These can be used and adapted to create jewelry, embellishments for
scrapbooks, journals, or art quilts, collage art, really wherever your
imagination or fancy takes you! Then, I'll
show you how to combine them all into a mobile that's bright, fun, and sure to make any place you choose to hang it, well, happier.
So I'm really truly a doily girl now. HOW HOW could this happen? It began with some plastic one's I used as masks for spray paint on canvas well over a year ago. It progressed to the Martha Stewart doily stencils that I've used three or four times on bulletin boards at Jasper's school. (I'm hoping they like lace and doilies there too or I might really be annoying some folks')... Then there was the doily dress this summer. I still LOVE that dress. And the doilies and lace I used to decorate the tent for my sister in law's baby shower.

Stampington's preview of Sew includes my floral bouquet!

But this doily obsession is just part of a great big love I've had for vintage these last 7+ years. I went gaga over junk market style. I treasure my vintage re purposing mags like Greencraft. I love the way people have embraced the old but have put their own spin on it. Bicycle wheels turned into photo holders, old trays turned into memo boards, thimbles into pendants... the list goes on and on. There is just so much inspiration and creativity shown in these areas. Seeing people re imagining a thing into something completely different just fills me with happiness. I'm really truly giddy when Junk Bonanza happens each fall.

Reusing or re purposing the old into new is a basic for the trend called granny chic. But it also includes things like newly crocheted granny squares showing up on the fashion runways. It incorporates vintage fabrics, cross stitch, florals, lace, and beautiful colors. Each issue of the British mag, Mollie Makes is just filled with it and it couldn't make me happier. BUT, I'm keeping this to myself. Because my husband who loves the modern would be very very concerned. So shh.... don't tell. But, if you'd like more doily inspiration check out my doily bulletin board on pinterest. There's a granny chic there too... but don't tell! And thanks for reading!!!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14477444986728004457noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8370161902048109420.post-56401043591695018462012-04-03T10:00:00.000-05:002012-04-03T10:00:02.870-05:00Check out the latest Jewelry Affaire!

He was completely unprepared for my reaction. I LOVE this magazine. I know I say that a lot. But I tend to really really love the thick gorgeous art mags that are out there right now. There is so much inspiration and beauty to be found in these. I really dog ear each copy I get. Jewelry Affaire, if you don't recognize it, is a relatively new magazine to Stampington publications. It's goal is to publish absolutely gorgeous, fabulous jewelry that is simple to make. It's great for beginner's who are just trending toward jewelry from other crafts and want to get great results and try a variety of media.

In this latest Jewelry Affaire I am thrilled and so so grateful to have an article featuring my stitched wire cuffs. Check out the pic above! They're a simplified version of the Cloud 9 Cuff in my book, Creative Bloom. What I did was take the basic cuff shape and rather then add detail with additional wire work I used fabrics, buttons, and trims to create an embellished look. Trust me though. These girls are super simple.

Some jewelry I make I love but for some reason don't wear all that often. The cuffs I wear all the time. They're super comfy and cushy and you can make it as loose or form fitting as you want. I like mine pretty form fitted so they don't slide around on me. So if you've been thinking cuffs are pretty cute AND you want to try something new- check out this latest issue of Jewelry Affaire! Thanks for stopping by!!!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14477444986728004457noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8370161902048109420.post-24607690778169431342012-04-02T21:08:00.000-05:002012-04-02T21:45:36.924-05:00The First Time I Make Something
So a weekend or two ago the family and I went to to visit my husband's parents. The last couple of times we've gone my MIL has had me bring my sewing machine with. Why? Because she knows having a project makes me happy and learning something new puts me over the moon. At Christmas she showed me how to do some crazy quilting, how to use a double needle to stitch, and how to lock stitch. It was the first time I'd really had time to sit down and get to know my Janome and I really really enjoyed it. This time she had a lesson in hand picking zippers, and sewing a simple dress lined up. But I had just gotten Amy Butler's new book, Style Stitches at the library and really wanted to learn how to make some of the gorgeous bags that are in it.
My sewing skills are pretty elementary yet but with my MIL's help I was able to stitch up a pretty decent version of Amy's teardrop purse. I haven't used an actual pattern since I made my first apron for 4-H (a way long time ago). She showed me some tips for copying patterns onto tracing paper and I copied out all the pieces of the pattern Friday night and spent Saturday cutting and sewing the bag (after a quick trip to JoAnn's for fusible interfacing and magnetic snaps). It was touch and go but I was able to get it done in time to clear off the table for supper. I really enjoy learning new things and being able to make a purse that looks like a purse, plus get some experience tracing and cutting patterns, as well as interpreting pattern instructions was pretty exciting.

Almost done!

Of course, my mind was instantly trying to jump to where I would take this. When I first try a recipe I follow it pretty closely. But after that first time I tweak it. That's how following a pattern or copying something is similar to following a recipe. Make it once or twice and then I'll start to alter it, tweak it, re-imagine it. With the teardrop I think I'll square out the bottom, make it a patchwork or add some applique, and make the band across the top thicker. I'm thinking coffee bags, osnaburger fabrics, or maybe add a zakka feel with some sashiko. Not sure yet. But I am pretty excited. Which is why you see three different teardrop bags. After the first I came home and cut 4 more from fabric I'd been given- just to be sure I really had the pattern and process down. A wee bit obssessive to make three, I'll admit.( I didn't keep them- in case you're wondering why I would even want three of the same pattern of bag. I donated them to the non-profit shop I work with). But the book does have to go back to the library soon- yup, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. :)
How about you? Do you have any favorite patterns that you make over? Or a favorite pattern book you'd like to share? I'd love to have you share!!! And thank you, as always, for spending a wee bit of your day here. I appreciate it SO MUCH!!!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14477444986728004457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8370161902048109420.post-75887688353132437682012-03-27T14:19:00.001-05:002012-04-02T21:46:05.749-05:00A Few Pics and Some Catch Up

So I have been creative lately. Really. I just haven't shared because honestly the whole knock me down bronchitis thing through me for a serious loop. It pulled me out of my usual and made me take naps during the day and take life more easily. I hated it but it was probably good in some ways. But- enough of that. Here are some pics of what I've been doing....

Probably the most fun I have had lately has been brainstorming for Art2heart. They officially asked me on staff about 4 weeks ago as a product development chick. I don't know what my official title would be if this were a real job and not a volunteer thing but I can tell you what I've gathered is my role. FIRST- I get to do what I have always done which is peruse magazines, books, etsy, and other online sources for fresh ideas and trends in the making. This has given me the excuse I needed to go to my husband and tell him I really NEED a subscription to Mollie Makes. Sorry sweetie, need to stay on top of the trends and they tend to hit the UK before they come here. Just a hint- but granny chic is definitely on the upswing right now. I saw the cutest cross stitch mural done by Eline Pellinkof. It made my jaw drop. Gorgeous!!!

In the name of research I've also been checking out gift shops in the area. Just to see what the categories they carry are. Seems like housewares, seasonal, jewelry, home dec, collage art, gift basket goodies, children's, men's, women's boutique clothes/bags/scarves, and also affirmation art in the form of wall art, greeting cards, stationary, etc. Am I missing something? Do you shop gift shops?

I've also been busy working on some new designs for my etsy shop as well as some submissions for magazines. I just finished up a stint playing with coffee bags that was really really fun. I'll show you a pic when I can. :) Oh and I've been learning to use my sewing machine a bit more. So that's a slice of what I've had my hands into. I'll round up some pics (including the new bags I sewed last weekend) and show you more soon. :) Thanks for stopping by!
It started with a cold and turned into 2 weeks of hacking and coughing. I hate colds. I hate sinus infections and bronchitis. I am so ready to be done with this. For a while I kept my sense of humor and made jokes about my new low sexy voice but no more. I am done! And my poor family sucuumbed so we've been a bunch of sickies around here. Not really up to doing a whole lot. So I have a list of things I want to do. I list of things I have to do. AND a list of things that if I don't do them something will happen. I don't know what for sure but am not going to take the chance. Just kidding. Kind of.
We always feel like our world needs us. Guess it's a grown up version of the self centeredness kids have. They think it's all about them because it's them. Right? We know we're not the center of the universe. The world at large goes round without knowing we're even there. BUT I know I act like MY bit of the world would come crashing down without me. If I don't do this or that thing that I said I would.... oh, no! A bulletin board, some decorations for a school function, I push myself because I think what I do is important. My husband just shakes his head.
But- I do believe what I do is important. I make things beautiful. I make the background of people's every day a little nicer. I remind them that there are wonderful beautiful things in this world created just to make us happy. So although I have to admit that the world will not stop spinning if I take a week or two to recover, I do believe what I do matters to the world. Make sense? It is hard to draw the line though.
I bet you have similar issues. Because you believe that what you do is important you soldier on even when a rest and common sense tells you to take a break. But we drop everything if it has to do with taking care of our kids. We need to remember to make ourselves a priority too. This is of course, me lecturing me. Gonna go pop some ibuprofen and lay down. Be back soon!!!!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14477444986728004457noreply@blogger.com4
